Quebec Eyes ‘Iris’

Quebec’s government wants to bask in the reflected glory of Cirque Du Soleil’s new Hollywood show.

So to capitalize on the opening of “Iris” at the Kodak Theatre in September, the L.A. office of the Canadian province is organizing the first Quebec in Hollywood festival. The goal is to introduce L.A. fashion buyers, film producers and other potential investors to entertainment-related businesses in Quebec.

Yanick Godbout, head of the Quebec government’s L.A. office in Westwood, conceived the event.

“For years I’ve been asking, ‘How can I showcase Quebec’s excellence in L.A.?’ ” he said. “I saw all the buzz around ‘Iris.’ Why not use the spotlight?”

The festival will run Sept. 9 to 25, coinciding with the opening of “Iris.”

Godbout has enlisted some local companies. Miracle Mile-based concert promoter Goldenvoice is organizing music shows and L.A. non-profit American Cinematheque is setting up a film festival. Sensation Mode of Montreal will present a fashion show for department store buyers and studio costume designers.

The festival will be funded half by the government of Quebec and half by corporate sponsors, such as Air Canada.

The Egyptian Theater, Hollywood & Highland Center, El Rey Theater, Music Box and others will host events for free, in exchange for box office receipts.

“We don’t have a large budget,” Godbout said. “But we’ve been amazed by the warm reception.”
