Peerless Reports Loss in Quarter

Peerless Systems Corp., which licenses digital imaging and networking technologies, said it lost money in its second quarter largely due to lower fee revenue.

After Tuesday’s market close, the El Segundo company reported a net loss of $131,000 (-1 cent per share) for the quarter ended July 31, compared with net income of $1.9 million (12 cents) a year earlier.

Revenue fell 62 percent to $800,000 as the company failed to sign up large new licensees during the quarter. A $1 million license boosted revenue a year ago.

Last month, Peerless announced plans to buy back up to $45 million in stock.

Prior to the announcement, shares closed down 2 cents, or less than a percent, to $3.20 on the Nasdaq.
