Edison International on Monday said its third-quarter earnings jumped 27 percent as revenue rose, particularly at its power-generation unit.

The Rosemead parent of the Southern California Edison utility and the Edison Mission Group wholesale power generator reported net income of $510 million ($1.56 a share) compared with $403 million ($1.22) a year earlier.

Revenue rose 3.4 percent to $3.79 billion, after falling last year. Revenue from Edison Mission’s coal-fired generation plants, which had tailed off in recent quarters due to low prices, jumped nearly 16 percent.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters on average expected per-share profit of $1.18 on revenue of $3.95 billion.

“Both of our companies delivered solid earnings growth this quarter,” said Chief Executive Theodore F. Craver Jr. in a statement.

The company raised its per-share profit forecast for the year to $3.45 to $3.60 a share, up from $3.15 to $3.45.

Shares were up 55 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $36.52 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
