WHO’S WHO IN LAW – Mickey Mayerson

The Business Journal raises the curtain on the legal stars who work in L.A.’s entertainment industry.

MICKEY MAYERSON, 54

Firm: Loeb & Loeb LLP

Law School: Columbia University

Selected Clients: Relativity Media LLC, Harper Collins, Newmarket Capital Group, OddLot Entertainment, Bold Films, The Film Department, River Road Productions, Newbridge Film Capital, Bank of America, Wells Fargo Bank, Bain Capital, Cold Springs Pictures, Grosvenor Park, Marvel Entertainment.

Years in Practice: 29

Most Challenging Deal: Representing a newly formed Japanese premium pay-TV movie channel, where none of the executives spoke English or knew much about the movie business, negotiating against four major studios, all at the same time, for the purpose of acquiring the Japanese broadcast rights in all of their newly released movies.

Best Career Moment: Leaving Loeb’s tax department for Loeb’s entertainment department as a younger lawyer. That gave me the opportunity to learn from such great lawyers as Saul Rittenberg, Mickey Slobodien and Jerry Offsay.

Worst: Either I don’t remember it or it has not yet happened.

Highlight From Past Year: Representing Relativity Media in its groundbreaking licensing deal with Netflix, under which Netflix will be able to stream Relativity’s new releases shortly after the movies become available on DVD.

Longest Workday: Twenty hours representing the bank group funding Village Roadshow’s first slate deal with Warner Bros. that included such pictures as “The Matrix” and “Analyze This.”

How My Practice Is Changing: Dial-in conference calling has eradicated the “phone-tag” excuse.

If I Weren’t an Attorney: Having a business degree in addition to a law degree, I could have just as easily have become an investment banker. And had I made that choice, I probably would be retired by this point.

My Colleagues Don’t Know: I listen to college courses on my way to work each day.
