Making Posh Push

Nannies can often be spotted pushing Bugaboo strollers through the streets of Brentwood or Santa Monica.

And the strollers, made by Amsterdam’s Bugaboo International, have a price tag to match. They cost about $600 to $1,000, come equipped with wheels that can sludge through snow and sand, and can even be customized with fabric by noted designer Paul Frank.

Until now, Bugaboo strollers and accessories, including parasols, blankets and diaper bags, could only be purchased through online retailers, and at stores such as Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. However, the company recently opened its first store at its U.S. corporate headquarters in El Segundo.

“There are people who have never heard of Bugaboo before and want to understand why it is the price it is,” said Kari Boiler, president of Bugaboo Americas.

But even pricy strollers can come with some glitches. Last year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled about 22,500 Bugaboo Bee strollers due to brake failures.

Bugaboo offered free repair kits to customers who purchased the stroller, according to the safety commission.
