News-talk station KFI-AM (640) slipped past perennial ratings powerhouse KIIS-FM (102.7) to claim the number one spot in the latest radio ratings, released Wednesday by Arbitron Inc.

KFI, which has consistently been the number two station, had 4.9 percent listener share in August. Top 40 music station KIIS, which has been the top station in Los Angeles since last summer when Arbitron began to use electronic measurement devices to compile the rankings, had a 4.7 percent share.

Classic hits KRTH-FM (101.1) and soft rock station KOST-FM (103.5) tied for third place with 4.2 percent listener share each. Rock station KCBS-FM (93.1) came in fifth with a 4 percent share.

KFWB-AM (980), which recently flipped from an all news format to news talk, tied for 31st with ESPN-owned KSPN-AM (710). Both stations had 1 percent listener share.
