Eye Guy Gets in the Groove

Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler has two lives.

The first is as a serious eye surgeon and director of the Boxer Wachler Vision Institute in Beverly Hills. The second is more surprising: budding rap artist and star of his own music video on YouTube.

“I’m a fun person,” explained Boxer Wachler, 43, who said he wrote the lyrics while on an airplane to a conference.

The video’s ostensible purpose is to promote a contest his office is conducting through the end of the year awarding free Lasik surgery to whoever submits the most creative video explaining why they need it. But the real reason, the doctor admits, is to exercise his lifelong proclivity for appearing on camera, beginning in the student films he made as a teen.

“I wanted to show people that, hey, if the doctor can do it, anybody can do it,” said Boxer Wachler, who sings and dances in the 90-second video wearing blue scrubs surrounded by six gyrating employees decked out in Elton John-style glasses.

Is a new career in the offing?

“I’m not quitting my day job, just so you know.”

Roadside Attraction

Visitors to Australia tend to remember sandy beaches, koalas and kangaroos. Brett Brewer remembers his rental car.

Brewer, the president of Adknowledge Inc. in Santa Monica, was in Australia on business with his wife, Sky. They wanted to go to the beach during some down time, so Brewer searched for a rental car.

“I walked onto the lot and the guy had one car left, and he asked me, ‘Can you drive a manual?’” recalled Brewer, 37. “And I’m like, ‘Well, shoot, I guess I can.’”

Brewer actually hadn’t driven a stick shift in more than five years. And there was an added complication: Australians drive on the opposite side of the road. Not only that, his car’s stick was also on the left and its clutch was on the right.

Brewer said he got the hang of it after a couple blocks. His wife, apparently, disagreed.

“It was a smooth trip mostly, other than the fact that there were 10 to 15 times when she would shout things like, ‘Look out! Get over!’” he said.
