Motorcar Parts Reports Dismal Quarter

The slowdown in the auto industry took its toll on Motorcar Parts of America Inc. as the Torrance remanufacturer of alternators and starters reported slower quarterly sales.

The company reported a net loss of $1.2 million (-10 cents per diluted share) in the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31, compared with net income of $2.7 million (22 cents) for the comparable period a year earlier. Revenue was off 16.7 percent to $29.9 million.

The company blamed the shortfall on an inventory reduction by a large customer and an agreement with another customer to defer certain sales. Motorcar Parts had previously announced the inventory reduction with its largest customer, AutoZone Inc.

For the full fiscal year, net income was $3.9 million (32 cents) compared with $4.6 million (39 cents) a year ago. Revenue rose 1.5 percent to $135 million.

Shares of Motorcar Parts declined 56 cents, or 13 percent, to $3.58 per share in morning trading on the Nasdaq.
