‘Positive’ Bounce

For legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, tough economic times like these give business leaders the opportunity to set an example for their employees. The 98-year-old Bruin icon, who led the college to 10 NCAA championships, contends that the most important quality is to remain optimistic.

“You must keep a positive attitude. Those around you will follow your example,” he said.

He made the remarks at the John Wooden Global Leadership Award dinner May 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Westwood campus’ Anderson School of Management gives the award to executives who exemplify his optimism. This year’s honoree was Ken Chenault, chief executive of American Express.

Wooden said that leaders like Chenault will help revive the economy.

“Back in the ’30s, we came out of (the Great Depression) and we will do it again,” he said. “I don’t know how long it will take this time, but we will get through it.”

Wooden also mentioned that he thinks UCLA’s planned renovation of Pauley Pavilion is too expensive.
