Northrop Grumman Corp.’s shipbuilding division has been awarded a $374 million contract for preliminary work on the second Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, the Defense Department said.

Los Angeles-based Northrop earlier received a $5.1 billion contract to build the lead ship in the Navy’s next-generation aircraft carrier fleet.

The 21-month contract announced late Thursday is for design, planning and procurement of the second carrier in the Ford class. The work will take place at the company’s Newport News, Va., facility. Northrop said approximately 300 people will be involved the project by the end of its first year.

Northrop shares were up 94 cents, or 2 percent, to $47.69 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
