From his Hollywood home, Rohan Marley carries on the legacy of his father, reggae singer Bob Marley, who died in 1981.

And it’s a legacy that about to get more prominent after last week’s deal between the Marley family and Hilco Consumer Capital, a Toronto retail investment firm.

Under the deal, Hilco will develop and manage all brands based on the reggae superstar’s images and music, including Tuff Gong Clothing and Marley Coffee, the two L.A. companies headed by Rohan Marley.

Marley said he will maintain creative control of the ventures, and Hilco will explore cross-branding deals to promote his father’s message of universal love and peace. In addition, Hilco will finally try to control the worldwide piracy of Bob Marley’s image.

“Make this article good make it positive because I send out positive energy, and if you pass it along, sooner or later it comes back to all of us,” Marley told the Business Journal.

To perpetuate his father’s message to a younger generation, Marley has founded Relics of Antiquity, a clothing line that uses African images and symbols with positive energy.

“We wanted to give children an uplift, not clothes with skulls and crossbones because they have negative energy, the symbol of poison,” said Marley, referring to favorite icons of recent years. “So I went to Africa and found symbols with positive energy.”

Although not directly linked to his father’s music, the Relics of Antiquity brand falls under the Hilco deal, as do other ventures of the Marley family.
