Spirit Of Giving

This holiday season companies across Los Angeles are canceling corporate parties. It’s a good way to save some coin; besides, parties can be uncomfortable during a recession.

The local office of consulting firm Pricewaterhouse-Coopers International Ltd. thinks it has a better idea.

The company is foregoing its holiday party, too, but instead will donate the money typically reserved for the event to two local charities: Women’s Care Cottage, which provides emergency shelter space and transitional housing to families displaced by lost jobs, and Bresee Foundation, a non-profit community center that provides services to low-income youth.

“It’s the right thing to do,” said Martha Corbett, managing partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Southern California-Phoenix region. “It just didn’t feel right to us to have holiday celebrations during that period of time. It made a lot more sense to take that money and donate it to the community.”

The consulting firm, based in New York, is donating $1.55 million to charities this holiday season as its other offices across the nation also forego parties.
