Disney Online said Wednesday that it has acquired several family online sites from Toronto new media company Kaboose for $18.4 million.

The Burbank online publishing unit of Walt Disney Co’s Interactive Media Group said the sites, which include Kaboose.com, Babyzone.com, and AmazingMoms.com, will be integrated into Disney’s line-up of Web sites.

“This acquisition strengthens our position as a top entertainment destination for kids and families, and a trusted online resource for parents,” Paul Yanover, executive vice president and managing director of Disney Online, said in a statement. The new sites will broaden the company’s online audience, he said, particularly in the baby and mom categories.

The sale to Disney was part of larger transaction in which Kaboose sold its non-North American assets to Barclays Private Equity Ltd. The 10-year-old company said it was winding down operations due to weak advertising support for family-friendly Web sites during the current economic slump.

Disney shares were up 23 cents, or 1 percent, to $18.40 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
