SAG Dissidents Win Control of Local

Screen Actors Guild dissidents backed by Sally Field and Tom Hanks won control of the union’s Hollywood local on Thursday, potentially signaling a new approach in deadlocked labor negotiations with the studios.

The group called Unite for Strength won six of 11 seats representing Hollywood on the national board. The winning candidates included Morgan Fairchild and “Judging Amy” star Amy Brenneman, according to an e-mailed statement.

Unite blamed the guild’s current leadership for a rift between SAG and the smaller American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which ratified a contract with studios on July 8. Failure of the two unions to negotiate together weakened the guild’s position, the group said during the campaign.

“This is very much a signal from the members that they want a deal,” said Jonathan Handel, an entertainment attorney with TroyGould in Los Angeles.
