Automaker Shifts Gears

Disney Channel doesn’t show advertisements, so a Santa Monica agency is getting Honda’s message on the channel Trojan-horse style: It’s a contest promotion, not an ad.

Torrance-based American Honda Motor Co. will be the exclusive automotive sponsor for the film “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” set to open in theaters Oct. 24.

RPA Inc., Honda’s agency, has created a 30-second TV spot mixing imagery from the film and the automotive company’s Odyssey minivan. The spot will appear on cable and network TV.

But the spot showcasing Honda that will air on the Disney Channel, the cable TV outlet that launched the first two “HSM” movies, is different. Because Disney Channel doesn’t show ads, Honda created a contest, which the Disney Channel spot promotes.

Besides TV, the campaign includes a 30-second spot on Radio Disney, a full-page ad in Family Fun magazine and a co-branded Web site.

Ad Squad

To stir up business in a struggling economy, one Long Beach ad agency decided to make a TV commercial that promotes its skill in making TV commercials.

The Kreisler Group spot features three women detectives who solve clients’ marketing problems. The campaign spoofs the “Charlie’s Angels” TV and movie franchise.

“We do take our client’s work very seriously, but we also realize the importance of keeping things fun as a way to unlock our creativity and produce excellent results for our clients,” said Julie Kreisler, president, who appears in the commercial.

Other members of the Kreisler squad in the commercial include Rachel Stocking, a media buyer, and Leslie Perryman, a media assistant.
