Avery Sues over RFID Patents

Avery Dennison Corp. filed two suits against rival Alien Technology Corp. on Thursday over technology used in labels that incorporate radio-frequency identification chips.

Avery Dennison said in its suits that it developed technology to automate ways the RFID chips and antenna are incorporated into one label, making it cheaper to manufacture the high-tech devices.

The Pasadena-based label and office supply maker contends that Morgan Hill-based Alien is selling RFID labels “that are assembled using a manufacturing process that directly infringes” on two Avery Dennison patents.

Tokyo-based Toray Industries Inc. makes the equipment that produces the chips used by Alien; Avery Dennison sued Toray back in April.

In both suits, Avery Dennison is seeking cash compensation and a court order to block use of its inventions.
