Westin, Union Agree to Negotiate

The management of the Westin LAX hotel announced Thursday that a lingering labor dispute has been resolved.

Under the agreement, hotel management recognized UNITE HERE as the bargaining agent for hotel workers. It will hold contract negotiations with the union. The union said it will add the Westin to its list of hotels at which it is recommending guests stay.

This marks a big victory for local unions, which have been moving to unionize hotels along the Century Boulevard corridor near the airport for more than a decade. The city has gotten involved by trying to impose the city’s living wage on the hotels along the corridor, even though the hotels do no contracting with the city, which is the usual threshold for imposing the living wage. The living wage issue has been hotly contested and is in the courts.

The Westin is the second-largest hotel on Century Boulevard and the fifth-largest in the county.
