LAX’s Landing Fee May Take Off

Airlines would pay more to land at Los Angeles International Airport under a proposal set for consideration on Monday, the Daily Breeze reports.

The fee hike comes at a time when airport officials are seeking ways to generate more revenue and air carriers are making plans to drop thousands of weekly flights at LAX this fall.

By November, LAX is expected to see a 16.7 percent reduction of flights and an 11.1 percent loss of available seats compared with a year earlier, according to updated figures posted Friday by Innovata, an airline industry database in Atlanta.

The Board of Airport Commissioners will consider whether to increase landing fees from $3.35 to $3.85 for every 1,000 pounds of aircraft weight.

Airline landing fees go toward day-to-day operations at the airport.

The 50-cent fee hike translates into big money for large jetliners landing at LAX. Under the proposal, it would cost $2,194 to land a Boeing 747-400 jetliner at LAX, up from the current rate of $1,909.

It costs the same aircraft $1,710 to land in San Francisco, $1,494 to land in Seattle and $1,992 to land at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
