Northrop Grumman Corp. said on Monday that it has won a U.S. Navy contract to develop a data link for real-time battle information at sea that it values at as much as $218 million.

The initial contract is for one year and will reach the ceiling value if options are exercised for four additional years, the Los Angeles-based defense contractor said. Northrop has received $3.3 million to begin work.

The Next Generation Command and Control Processor provides real-time information about friendly and enemy activity during combat. It will be installed on Navy ships and those of U.S. allies, upgrading current systems with additional data capabilities, according to the statement.

In a separate announcement, Northrop said it has been selected by the Turkish Air Force to provide its latest fiber-optic gyro inertial navigation system for use on the service’s C-130 aircraft. It’s the company’s first international sale of the LN-260 system. The U.S. Air Force and Navy earlier bought the system for some of their F-16 and F-5 jets, respectively.

Northrop shares were down dropped 72 cents, or 1 percent, to $64.93 at midmorning on the New York Stock Exchange.
