Northrop Grumman Corp. said Friday that it has named Linda Mills to run the company’s surging information-technology unit, replacing retiring James O’Neill.

The move is effective Feb. 1 and will have Mills, 58, reporting directly to Chief Executive Ronald Sugar.

Earlier this week, the Los Angeles-based defense and government contractor said in its fourth-quarter earnings report that the unit increased its sales 13 percent to $4.5 billion in 2007, as Northrop expanded its offerings to federal, state and local governments. The division accounted for 14 percent of Northrop’s total sales of $32 billion in 2007.

Shares in Northrop gained 2 percent to $79 in afternoon trading Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.
