Newhall Ranch Plan Advances

After 12 years of litigation and protests, the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission on Wednesday unanimously approved a tentative tract map for the first of four “villages” in the massive, 20,855-home Newhall Ranch development near Santa Clarita, the Los Angeles Daily News reports.

The Landmark Village tract – consisting of 1,444 single-family homes, apartments and condominiums – will require the approval of the Board of Supervisors before construction can begin.

If the board approves the project on the banks of the Santa Clara River abutting the Ventura County line, The Newhall Land and Farming Company plans to break ground in late 2009.

“It really is a full community,” Newhall spokeswoman Marlee Lauffer said, noting that it has 6,000 acres of open space. “It is going to have five elementary schools, a junior and senior high school, fire stations, a library, sheriff’s station, 30 miles of new roads and 50 miles of new trails.”

The project, which is double the size of Griffith Park and the largest ever proposed in California, has faced opposition primarily from environmental groups who say it’s an auto-oriented sprawl project and are concerned about its impact on the river, wildlife and whether there will be enough water to supply the homes.
