Mattel Settles With States Over Tainted Toys

Mattel Inc. agreed to pay $12 million to 39 U.S. states to settle claims it shipped toys tainted with lead paint, attorneys general in various states said Monday.

New York, Massachusetts, Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Vermont are among the states benefitting from the settlements.

The El Segundo toymaker recalled more than 21 million Chinese-made toys last year after it became known that the products were tainted with lead paint and tiny magnets that children could swallow.

Earlier this month in a separate action, Mattel and eight other toy companies agreed to pay a combined $1.8 million to settle a California lawsuit over the lead tainted toys. Mattel’s share of the settlement amount was not broken out.

California Attorney Gen. Jerry Brown and Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo had alleged toy companies knowingly exposed individuals to lead and failed to provide any warning about the risk, a violation of Proposition 65, the state’s safe drinking water and toxic enforcement act.
