Same-Store Sales Rise for CKE

Thanks to its upper-end burgers, fast-food chain operator CKE Restaurants Inc. said Wednesday that same-store sales rose during the four weeks ended Aug. 11 at both its Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s restaurants.

Sales in restaurants open at least one year, a key retail metric, rose 3 percent, including a 4.2 percent increase at Carl’s Jr. and a 1.4 percent rise at Hardee’s, said Carpinteria-based CKE. Year-to-date, same-store sales rose 2.6 percent, including a 3.9 percent rise at Carl’s Jr. and a 1 percent rise at Hardee’s.

In a statement, Chief Executive Andrew Puzder pointed to the success of its $5.69 Prime Rib Burger, which is the highest price burger the company has sold to date, and its line of “Six Dollar” burgers.

Higher prices for cheese, potatoes, oils and wheat drove up costs, but the company said it was able to partly offset that by raising prices on other items on its menu.

CKE shares were up 13 cents, or 1 percent, to $13 in trading Wednesday morning on the Nasdaq.
