A fifth state attorney general has sued Countrywide Financial Corp. on allegations of making unaffordable loans and using unfair and deceptive practices.

West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw charged that Countrywide, which was acquired by Bank of America Corp. last month, “advised consumers who were sold unconscionable, unaffordable loans to refinance when they could no longer afford them,” according to the suit.

Countrywide’s former chief executive, Angelo Mozilo, was also named in the

lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday.

West Virginia joins California, Connecticut, Florida and Illinois that have sued Countrywide over its business practices. McGraw said he hasn’t spoken with other state attorneys general about consolidating lawsuits, spokeswoman Kim Stitzinger Jones told Bloomberg News.

The company and its former officers also are being investigated by regulatory agencies that include the Federal Trade Commission and the Secuities and Exchange Commission.
