American States Water Co. said Monday that its chief executive will retire at the end of the year and Chief Financial Officer Robert Sprowls will succeed him.

Sprowls, who also is the San Dimas-based water service and electricity utility’s executive vice president of finance, corporate secretary and treasurer, will succeed Floyd Wicks on Jan. 1. Like Wicks, he’ll also have the president’s title.

Wicks, who is retiring after 21 years with American States and 40 years in the water industry, will remain on the board of directors with the position of vice chairman. He also will serve as a consultant.
