Walt Disney Co. said late Tuesday that it plans to make 10 animated films by 2012 plus four straight-to-DVD films that are part of the “Fairy” franchise.

Of the feature cartoons, the Burbank-based entertainment company said sequels for “Cars” and `”Toy Story” are on tap. The roster includes six movies from the company’s Pixar studio and four from Walt Disney Animation.

The announcement is part of Chief Executive Robert Iger’s ongoing plan to make the company’s animation business a priority.

The films in the works include a post-apocalyptic, robot love story called “Wall-E,” as well as a science-fiction film called “King of the Elves.”

Disney’s Pixar will release its first ever 3-D film titled “Up,” and in 2010, an animated “Rapunzel” will be released by the Disney studio, the company said.

Shares in Disney were down 15 cents to $30.92 in early trading Wednesday.
