The L.A. Live Boom Begins

With much of Downtown Los Angeles dark for the night, the Nokia Theatre was anything but last week, as dozens of swiveling searchlights lit up the skyline in anticipation of the venue’s Thursday, Oct. 18, opening, the Los Angeles Downtown News reports.


It was a trial run for the $100 million theater, which is gearing up for its premiere this week with a one-two punch by the Eagles and Dixie Chicks. But for many of the businesses, restaurants and hotels surrounding the emerging entertainment district, the bright lights signal quite another thing – more customers.


Jonathan Scott, general manager of the Palm steakhouse two blocks away, is expecting a busy season thanks to Downtown’s newest attraction. In addition to the full slate of Lakers, Clippers and Kings games, there will be several dozen events at the 7,100-seat Nokia Theatre by the end of the year. The Eagles and Dixie Chicks alone will perform six nights.
