Staar Surgical Co. named a new chief executive Wednesday, choosing the CEO of a Mountain View company that produces laser systems to treat eye conditions.

Monrovia-based Staar, which makes minimally invasive surgical products to treat ophthalmologic conditions, said Barry Caldwell would take over the chief executive role held for years by David Bailey.

Caldwell was chief executive, president and a director at Iridex Corp. for the past two years. Bailey will remain with the company as president of Staar’s international operations in Switzerland. Both men will serve on the company’s board of directors.

Staar, a leading maker of intraocular lenses to treat cataracts and other conditions, has plagued in recent years by manufacturing and other missteps that have resulted in Food and Drug Administration probes and fines. Over the past year, stock has lost more than half its value.

Shares in Staar were up 3 cents to $2.88 in trading Wednesday on the Nasdaq.
