Shares in Grill Concepts Inc. tumbled early Friday after the company reported a quarterly loss along with strong same-store sales.

Grill Concepts Inc. reported a third-quarter loss $589,000 (-7 cents per share), compared to a loss of $1.9 million (30 cents) from the same period a year earlier. This is the second quarterly loss in a row and the third out of the past five for the restaurant chain owner.

Revenues for the Los Angeles-based owner and operator of The Grill on the Alley and Daily Grill restaurants rose 11 percent to $21 million.

The company said its same-store sales grew 9.1 percent, with same-store sales at Grill on the Alley restaurants rising 16 percent while climbing 5.1 percent at Daily Grill restaurants.

Shares in Grill Concepts dropped 5 percent to $5.01 in early trading Friday on the Nasdaq. Shares are up 67 percent for the year.
