Hemancipation Guides Guys Who Recently Turned Single

Akilah Kamaria, a former Marine, is making new men out of wealthy Angelenos when their marriages fall apart.

She’s enjoying her new life as chief executive of Hemancipation, a Beverly Hills-based concierge and lifestyle consulting company targeting divorced men, which she founded two years ago in Chicago but recently moved to Los Angeles.

She had been unsatisfied with work as an IT consultant and not particularly enamored of the cold weather there, either. Now she gets to hang out at Bentley dealerships and doesn’t have to dress up like an Eskimo most of the year.

She describes the company as a “luxury lifestyle management service created for the needs of successful men.”

Kamaria, 44, provides a variety of services including image consulting, personal shopping and interior decorating.

Many of her clients are men of means who have recently gone through a divorce and need someone to handle mundane matters such as picking out a wardrobe and bigger stuff such as purchasing a home.

“By bringing in someone like Akilah, people who are already very busy don’t have to figure out themselves how to do something,” said Tim Lappen, a partner in the family wealth practice at Jeffer Mangels Butler & Marmaro LLP.

“A gentleman that contacted me last week needs a lot of things,” Kamaria said. “We are going to start with helping him pick out a wardrobe. There are custom tailors I have partnered with.”

She has also teamed up with luxury car dealerships, high-end audio/visual retail outlets and a furniture rental company, for divorcing guys who are suddenly unable to return home.

Much of Kamaria’s business referrals have come from divorce attorneys.

“We have a whole package of services for the guy that comes home and his wife tells him that she wants a divorce and he has to move out,” she said. “Most of the resources for divorces are targeted to women, so we feel that Hemancipation provides a much-needed service.”

Kamaria said the business grew from the informal assistance she provided her male friends when it came to decorating their homes and buying clothes. She quickly came to the realization this might make a perfect business, and would randomly approach men to get their feedback on the startup idea.

“A lot of guys thought I was trying to pick them up but I was just doing research,” she said.

That research has morphed into a business in which Kamaria can command in excess of $100 an hour. But in addition to the individual lifestyle consulting services, the company includes a party planning arm that puts on networking and socializing events for men, but which welcome women.

The first event took place at an audio/visual store and guests partook in high-end whiskey and demonstrations of the latest electronics. The most recent event, held last month, was titled “Cars, Bars and Cigars” and took place at the Bentley dealership in Beverly Hills. It included cigar rollers and was sponsored by Golftec, Hennessy and Oakley.

A portion of proceeds from the event went to the Semper Fi Fund, which provides assistance to injured Marines. A native of Jamaica, Kamaria was in the Marines for four years in the early 1980s. She was stationed in North Carolina and rose to the rank of lance corporal.

“The events allow us to build our brand,” Kamaria said. “But they also allow us to support those men and women who have been hurt serving this country and protecting our way of life.”
