Activision reported a profit of $698,000 and broke even on a per-share basis, compared to a loss of $24 million (-9 cents per share) from the same period a year earlier, beating analysts expectations of a 1-cent loss, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.

Sales for the Pasadena-based game developer rose 68 percent to $318, also smashing Wall Street’s expectations of $267 million.

Excluding equity-based compensation expenses, Activision earned $4.9 million, or 2 cents per share.

Activision added that it shipped more copies of “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock” during the quarter than any other game in the company’s entire history.

Shares in Activision dropped 15 cents and continued to lose another 1.8 in after-hours trading Monday on the Nasdaq.
