Extension for Disney World, Unions

Walt Disney Co.’s Orlando-based theme park Disney World has reached an agreement on a 30-day extension of its labor agreement with unions representing 21,000 employees.

The announcement was made late Monday and followed last week’s rejection by the union members of the Burbank-based entertainment company’s proposed three-year contract.

Members of the Service Trades Council voted to reject the proposed contract that Disney and union negotiators had endorsed, which included a 4 percent raise.

Union members complained that the current agreement didn’t provide sufficient raises for upper-tier employees and didn’t provide enough relief from health care costs. The previous pact expired May 21 and the latest extension will keep operations going until June 20.

Shares in Disney were down 6 cents to $36.38 in afternoon trading Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
