Primedia Inc. agreed to sell 70 of its enthusiast magazines to Ron Burkle’s Source Interlink Co. for $1.2 billion in cash, Source Interlink said.

Motor Trend, Hot Rod and Surfer magazines are among the titles included in the sale. The sale also includes 90 Web sites, and should leave the private media company controlled by private-equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., debt free, Bonita Springs-based Primedia said.

Source Interlink is controlled by Burkle’s Los Angeles-based Yucaipa Cos. The sale is expected to be completed during the third quarter.

The move comes after two failed attempts by the Los Angeles billionaire to buy media properties, Knight-Ridder and Tribune Co.
