FCC Approves Univision Acquisition

The acquisition of Univision Communications Inc. by a consortium of private equity buyers led by Los Angeles billionaire Haim Sabam was approved Tuesday by the Federal Communications Commission.

The $12.3 billion acquisition of the Spanish language broadcaster by Saban Capital Group, Madison Dearborn Partners and three other private equity firms already had received shareholder approval in the fall. The FCC’s approval was the final hurdle left for the deal.

The approval comes less than a month after the FCC fined Univision a record $24 million for failing to air at least three hours per week of educational shows for children. The company aired Spanish soap operas instead.

Shares of Univision closed up 6 cents to $36.21 Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
