CalAmp Corp., a manufacturer of wireless communications, satellite and other networking products, has agreed to buy SmartLink Radio Networks for $8.1 million, the Oxnard company said Tuesday.

CalAmp said the deal will enhance its offerings in the public safety communications market by allowing police and other agencies to improve their communications systems without having to replace their mobile radios.

“I am pleased to announce the agreement to acquire SmartLink, which represents another step forward in our strategy to build a significant business in the growing public safety communications marketplace,” said CalAmp Chief Executive Fred Sturm in a statement.

SmartLink had revenues of $2.3 million in 2006, according to Cal Amp, and is expected to generate $3.5 million in 2007 based on current orders.

Shares in Cal Amp were down 15 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $8.72 in afternoon trading Tuesday on the Nasdaq.
