Keystone to Appeal Patent Ruling

Aftermarket auto parts maker Keystone Automotive Industries Inc. said it will appeal an International Trade Commission decision not to review an adverse ruling in a patent claim case involving Ford Motor Co., the company said Thursday.

At issue are seven design patents the court said are valid patents held by Ford and were infringed upon by Keystone. However, the parts in question account for less than 0.1 percent of Keystone’s annual sales, the Pasadena-based company said.

Keystone maintains that preventing the company and others from importing and selling generic aftermarket parts will result in higher vehicle repair costs and escalating insurance rates. Generic auto parts are generally about 20 to 30 percent cheaper than repair parts made by the original equipment manufacturer and are often preferred by customers and insurance companies.

Shares in Keystone were up 50 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $33.20 in afternoon trading Thursday on the Nasdaq.
