City Housing Audit Paints Bleak Picture

Los Angeles City Controller Laura Chick released an audit of the city Housing Department Monday, which stated that the department faces considerable challenges.

According to the audit, the Los Angeles Housing Department has had only some success in preserving the city’s current stock of affordable housing, the department’s technology systems are inefficient and it doesn’t have an adequate way to measure progress, among other findings.

The audit also includes 28 recommendations for the department. Chick suggests that the department reexamine staffing levels and says it should develop goals that would measure “the net effect of new affordable housing units.”

The Housing Department plans a formal response to the audit, according to a representative from the department. The response will be released within 30 days.

The audit is critical of the department’s information systems and databases, which are part of the Housing Information Management System. This new system is currently being upgraded and should be complete by the end the year, according to the department representative.
