The number of passengers at Los Angeles International and Ontario International airports declined in 2006, according to operator Los Angeles World Airports.

The airports served a total of 68.1 million passengers during the year, down nearly 1 percent from 68.7 million.

LAX served 61 million passengers in 2006, a 0.7 percent dip while Ontario Airport passenger traffic served just over 7 million, a 2.3 percent fall. However, international travel from LAX dipped 3.3 percent while international traffic from Ontario, which mainly serves Mexico, increased 31 percent to 156,660 passengers.

Airport officials blamed the drop on airlines not adding additional capacity because of high fuel costs and a desire to increase profitability.
