Long Beach Port Sets Another Traffic Record

For the fifth consecutive year, the Port of Long Beach in 2006 set a record for cargo movement.

The port saw 7.29 million cargo containers pass through its terminals last year, an increase of almost 9 percent over 2005 totals.

Spurred by demand for products manufactured overseas, 2006 imports to the port increased more than 11 percent over the previous year, while exports jumped nearly 6 percent.

Analysts also point to the increasing use of large-capacity container ships as a factor in the rising cargo numbers.
