Northrop Grumman Corp. said Monday that it has received a $256 million contract from the Air Force to begin laying out the proposed design of the new E-10A Multi-Sensor Command and Control aircraft.

The contract covers the design and analysis of implementing several Northrop sensor systems, many of which are designed and manufactured in El Segundo, into Boeing’s 767 airframe. The initial plan is expected to be reviewed by the Air Force by the fall.

The E-10A is a follow-on system to the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System and is used for ground moving target tracking, and missile defense and is used by all branches of the military.

Shares in Los Angeles-based Northrop were up 2 cents to $67.30 in midday trading.
