Less than a month after gaining U.S. patent approval for its treatment protocol for cocaine dependence, Hythiam Inc. announced it has received a similar approval from European officials.

Los Angeles-based Hythiam said Wednesday that the European Patent Office has notified it that it will grant a patent for its Prometa treatment for cocaine dependency.

The protocol involves administering three generic medications and prescribed nutritional supplements in a specific sequence over two weekends in an effort to stop the cravings and side effects of withdrawal. The company, which operates and licenses treatment centers that use the protocol, offers similar treatment plans for alcohol and methamphetamine addiction.

The cocaine protocol also has patent protection in Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.

Shares in Hythiam were up 6 cents to $9.30 in midday trading.
