Northrop Grumman Corp. received a $24.8 million contract from the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center to develop system definition requirements for a new missile early-detection system.

The primary mission of the system will be to detect ballistic missiles in their launch and boost phases and then transmit data to ground systems to provide missile warning. The system is projected to be available for launch by fiscal year 2015.

Shares in Los Angeles-based Northrop were up 83 cents to $68.53 in midday trading.
