Cost of Living On the Rise

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index report released Wednesday found that overall costs in Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange Counties rose 3.2 percent over the past year.


Los Angeles housing prices which include household fuels and utilities, shelter and other peripheral costs increased 0.7 percent since December and 5.2 percent since Jan. 2006. One of the most notable changes was a month-to-month decrease in natural gas service of 7.1 percent. Year-over-year, gas service prices declined 27.3 percent. Electricity prices year-over-year shot up, however, by 20.1 percent since last year.


Transportation costs were up 0.8 percent for January, ending a five-month run of declines, but dropped 0.1 percent for the year. Gasoline prices increased 0.4 percent for the month and 4.1 percent for the year.

The national CPI also increased 3.2 percent.
