Family Builds Legacy of Care

Dr. J. Mario Molina is continuing a legacy started by his father, delivering health care to low-income families who might otherwise be ignored, the Pasadena Star-News reports.

The South Pasadena resident serves as president and CEO of Molina Healthcare Inc., which was founded by his father, Dr. C. David Molina, in 1980.

The company manages the health needs of low-income patients who have largely been neglected, Molina said. Their patients’ expenses are paid for by government programs such as Medicaid.

His father was an emergency room doctor and saw many low-income patients who came to the ER because they had nowhere else to go, Molina said.

“People should have access to doctors and health care, regardless of where they fall in the income spectrum,” Molina said. “The purpose of those clinics was to serve low-income people.”

C. David Molina started the business in 1980 with one clinic in the Long Beach area and operated it until his death in 1996, Molina said.
