Mother Hilton Mulls Move Into Fashion

0

Sisters Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton have careers in fashion. And no, their jobs aren’t merely to wear clothes. They have their own lines.

But if that’s not enough, their mother, Kathy Hilton, could be in on the action as well. A report out of Paris last week said that she’s a partner along with husband Rick Hilton in an investment group that could purchase the bankrupt French footwear company, Charles Jourdan.

If that happens, Hilton, who was born in Whittier and lives in Los Angeles, could have her own line of Charles Jourdan shoes. It would be the first product to bear her name.

“Anyone that is really into fashion always wants to do something of their own,” said Jennifer Cohen, who co-owns Switch, a women’s boutique in Beverly Hills.

And would Switch carry Hilton’s shoe line?

“We will take a look at it,” said Cohen.

Day Donates (Again)

Billionaire philanthropist Robert Day again appears in this column after making a donation, but Day is nowhere to be found.

Day and his wife have donated $30 million to the UCLA Department of Surgery. Last week, it was noted that Day had contributed $45,000 to fund a controversial ballot measure.

A UCLA spokeswoman said Day wasn’t available for an interview but Dr. Ronald Busuttil, UCLA’s executive chair of the surgery department, could take this reporter’s call.

So, does Busuttil think it’s uncanny that Day would appear in back-to-back Page 3 columns for donations to such different causes?

“Absolutely. But you know Mr. Day is an extraordinarily philanthropic individual,” said Busuttil in a brief phone interview before rushing off to surgery. Day’s donation will be used to fund education programs, purchase new equipment and fund research programs.

In September it was announced that Day, a Claremont McKenna College alum, was giving $200 million to that school.

Hotel Hangout

It appears that hotel bars are hot spots for at least one hip-hop impresario.

Suge Knight, the controversial co-founder and chief executive of L.A.’s Death Row Records, was seen enjoying the scene at the Century Plaza Hotel’s X Bar on Nov. 29.

Knight, a former bodyguard, worked with rappers Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur and rapper/producer Dr. Dre in the 1990s to establish Death Row as the dominant West Coast hip-hop record label.

Knight has also been spotted at the Beverly Hills Hotel’s Polo Lounge and Beverly Hills’ Peninsula Hotel.

But all the news related to hip-hop and local hotels hasn’t been good in the last few weeks on Dec. 4 rapper Chad “Pimp C” Butler was found dead in his room at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood. The rapper was a member of the group UGK.
