DirecTV to Offer Internet via Power Lines

DirecTV Group Inc. said Wednesday that it has entered into an agreement with Current Group LLC to provide high-speed Internet service through electric-power lines.

Under the agreement, the El Segundo-based satellite TV provider will market a bundled package of Current’s broadband and voice over Internet protocol services through the DirecTV brand.

Offering broadband through power lines is a new technology and will allow customers to plug a modem device into any electric outlet and have access to broadband-like Internet speeds.

DirecTV also currently resells high-speed Internet services from AT & T; Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Qwest Communications International Inc. under those phone companies’ brands.

DirecTV said that Current, based in Germantown, Md., is now building broadband networks in Cincinnati and Dallas-Fort Worth and said that residents in Dallas-Fort Worth should be able to get the phone, Internet and TV packages by the end of the year. Pricing on the packages hasn’t yet been determined but will be competitive compared with those currently offered by phone companies, DirecTV said.

Shares in DirecTV were flat at $22.10 in afternoon trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
