Crown Media Holdings Inc., the operator of the Hallmark Channel, reported a narrower loss Thursday despite a decrease in revenues.

The Studio City firm reported a fourth quarter loss of $30 million (-29 cents per share), an improvement on a $59.8 million (-57 cents) loss the company posted for the same period a year earlier.

Revenue for the Studio City-based firm fell 4 percent to $58.4 million, hurt mostly by a decline in license fees from its library of films. However, the company said ad revenue rose 31 percent to $52 million and subscriber fee revenue grew 16 percent. Costs of services fell to $53.1 million from $76.9 million a year ago.

For the year, the company’s loss jumped 17 percent to $389 million (-$3.71) while revenue inched 2 percent higher to $201 million.

Shares in Crown Media added 14 cents, or 3 percent, to $4.50 in afternoon trading Thursday on the Nasdaq.
