Herbalife Ltd. has signed a sponsorship deal with beach volleyball legend Karch Kiraly to become Kiraly’s official nutrition and energy drink, the Century City-based company said Monday afternoon.

The company also said it extended its deal with top-ranked woman’s beach volleyball player Elaine Youngs for a third year. The players will be featured in various promotions for Herbalife and its “Liftoff” energy drink brand, the official energy drink of Los Angeles-based AVP Inc.’s pro beach volleyball tour for 2007.

This deal marks the second high-profile athletic sponsorship deal Herbalife has signed in the past month. At the end of March, Herbalife signed a five-year, multimillion dollar expansion of its existing corporate sponsorship deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer club that for the first time puts the Herbalife logo on the team’s jersey.

Interest in the Galaxy is expected to be high this season since the club signed British soccer superstar David Beckham. The Galaxy kickoff their season Thursday against the FC Dallas soccer club at the Home Depot Center.

Kiraly is a three-time Olympic gold medalist who has compiled 148 career professional beach volleyball wins. Kiraly will play with Kevin Wong for the 2007 AVP Crocs Tour season, the company said.

Shares in Herbalife closed down $1.96, or 4.8 percent, Monday on the New York Stock Exchange.
