Mozilo to Stay Past ’06

The architect and innovator who helped build the largest mortgage company in the country, said he isn’t ready to give up his seat at the head of the table just yet.

Angelo Mozilo, co-founder and chief executive of Countrywide Financial Corp., told investors Tuesday that he has been working for several months with Countrywide’s directors to extend his role as CEO. He said a formal announcement was expected before Sept. 30, adding that he looks “forward to continued service to Countrywide.”

Countrywide appointed David Sambol president and chief operating officer Friday, replacing Stanford Kurland. Many industry insiders saw this promotion as steps toward replacing Mozilio upon his impending retirement, which he said was going to be on his 68th birthday this December.

Shares in Countrywide were up 87 cents in early trading to $34.35.
