State environmental regulators are reporting that Exxon Mobil Corp. had an equipment failure resulting in the release of hazardous material at its Torrance refinery.

The plant, 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, released nitrous oxide and sulfur dioxide into the surrounding area. No other details were available Wednesday morning.

The report didn’t specify which part of the refinery had a breakdown or how much of the hazardous chemicals were released.

The facility, owned and operated by Irving, Texas-based Exxon, processes an average of 150,000 barrels of oil per day.
